While it is important to preserve areas of olfactory silence scents are well suited to the hall, the living room and the study. A scented porcelain botanic art candle inspired by Georgian antiques.
THE BESPOKE HOME COMPOSITION
The way in which I create a signature home scent for a private client is quite similar to that of one's personal perfume. I spend time getting to know the person. Understanding their individual style, their history, memories and importantly their lifestyle. With all of this information I build a profile manipulating form and function to achieve a timeless and classic balance. Truly unique while expressing the environment and surrounds of the home.
Not only is the scent I compose unique, but the form in which it is diffused is considered and created to the functionality of the home. For instance while it is generally advisable not to fragrance a kitchen, if my client does not cook often I may recommend a thyme and mint fragrance to evoke the homely nature of a welcoming fresh gourmand space. A candle here would be appropriate as it adds another dimension of ambiance to the room with warm glowing light.
The importance of matching the right scent to the right interior is paramount to the harmony of the people experiencing the living space. For instance a winter ski lodge is a retreat for the primal function of keeping warm and appropriately so the space should evoke feelings of warmth and comfort with sweet dense scent molecules. Therefore walking in and experiencing a citrus fragrance sends mixed messages to the brain which may result in hesitation and unsettling confusion creating doubt and discomfort or an insatiability.
It would be more appropriate to work with the theme of warmth and comfort to construct the home fragrance, while considering the environment and perhaps drawing from the local surrounding raw materials at hand. A warm clove cinnamon fragrance can work well with Pin, the oil distilled from pine conifére needles found in the Aquitaine region of France.
What I offer clients in terms of creating the right scent for their home environment is an expression of oneself, an additional way of communicating their emotions and feelings. When composing a home scent it is more adventurous compared to fine fragrance reservation and the journey with my client can be quite exciting. Powerful raw materials may be used and more risks taken with voluptuous accents on rare and unusual accords.
Also the structure of a natural home scent composition does not need to follow a traditional fine fragrance construction whereby the nuances are manipulated based on the molecular volatility. It is advisable to create a composition using dense molecules because the extreme heat of the flame obliterates top notes before they are truly appreciated.
